History

-papacy flees to Minorca after having been forced out of Spain after its revolution (Heads of Spain > Presidents of the Spanish Republic)

-the Knights Hospitaller give up their sovereignty

-after war ends with Spain not returned to forces of reaction

-and because papacy believes its temporal sovereignty is necessary

Knights Hospitaller History

-in the wake of War of the French Revolution (1792-1804), British Isles gets Minorca

-serves as very important naval base for the British in the region


-however, during Second French War (1821-32), Franco-Spanish fleet invades Minorca in 1825, try to get it

-simultaneously Franco-Italian fleet occupies Malta, takes over lands of Knights Hospitaller

-causes shock across Europe as Knights Hospitaller respected

-British Isles gets British Wars > Popular Revolution (1827-9), in the middle of Franco-Spanish fleet invading Minorca

-massive confusion, but part of Franco-British peace treaty is that Knights Hospitaller (or rather a remnant of it) granted compensation for Malta in the form of Minorca in 1828

-Spain, fearing alliance b/w Britain and France crushing it, reluctantly accepts it


-Knights Hospitaller re-create themselves in Minorca

-a fair amount of migration from Italy, particularly from Naples

-quickly forms as neutral port

-campaigns against piracy, however this has for the most part been totally destroyed by French Algiers misadventure
